Caring for Love Birds is easy and fun with some extra precautions taken to ensure they get the best possible care. Their daily food should include a balanced diet. Here are some:

  • Seeds: These should be of high quality to ensure no digestive problems occur later down the road. The seed mix can include various types of seeds like canary seeds, millet, oats, sunflower seeds, etc.
  • Fruits: This species of birds especially love fruits. Adding this to their diet will give them a boost of nutrients and also provide a varied palate. This can include fruits ranging from apples, bananas, to berries and grapes.
  • Vegetables: This can also be added in addition to the fruits mentioned above. Some vegetables to include are spinach, broccoli, cucumber, bell peppers, and carrots, etc. make sure to wash them before feeding the love birds.
  • Pellets: These can be a great way to get additional nutrients for your pet. You can find one that is specially created for your birds. This can be a great supplement for their diet.
  • Legumes and Beans: These contain high nutrients and protein that can help your pet gain an even richer diet. Cooking these and adding them will help gain the essential nutrients. However, ensure that there is no seasoning on them.
  • Water: The most important part of life. This should be clean and fresh at all times to ensure no diseases can be caught through contaminated water.

Fatty foods must always be avoided, especially foods like nuts and seeds. They may seem like an easier way to get out of a rich diet but they only lead to obesity problems along with other health issues. Also, avoid other foods like avocado, chocolate, etc. that may harm the love birds and their digestive systems. Do not give them bread either as it lacks the required nutrients for them.

Bonus Tips

In addition to the above diet, here are some bonus tips to care for your love birds during the summer:

  • Make sure to provide a variety of food. It’s good to maintain a timetable but love birds get bored very easily. Changing up their diet will help dispel some of that boredom and also give them the nutrients they require. This also includes providing them with fresh water and refilling the bowl regularly to ensure the love birds do not get thirsty or hot.
  • Give them change. Along with a varied diet, clean and change the cage as well. This helps remove any chances of hygiene issues and also ensure that the cage remains clean and food does not rot or spoil in there.
  • Maintaining a timetable is of utmost importance. The love birds should know when they are going to be fed and that time should remain consistent every day. This will also stop them from getting hungry.

Additional Food Tips:

The varied diet mentioned above does it all. However, if you’re willing to change things up a little on occasion then here are lists of foods that can help you feed your love birds:

  • Strawberries: Love birds especially love this fruit especially. It is full of nutrients and a delicious addition to their diet. However, don’t give it to them all the time! It should be given as a delicacy and only occasionally. The strawberries themselves should be fresh and cut into pieces they can bite into. Also, make sure to observe your pet’s reaction to it. Some may be averse to it.
  • Cucumber: This is a great addition to the diet. Cucumbers are rich in nutrients and the required vitamins and minerals. They are also great for keeping the birds hydrated. Once you’re sure the vegetable is fresh, cut it into bite-sized pieces and give it to the love birds. However, they may not be willing to eat it immediately so it is preferred to add it into their diet slowly and carefully.
  • Tomatoes: This vegetable can be eaten but take some precautions – it should only be done in tiny amounts. The stem, leaves and the green part of unripe tomatoes have a substance known as solanine. This is harmful and very toxic to birds especially is it is eaten in large quantities. Hence, feeding tomatoes is fine if it is done in small quantities and any unripe part is removed. You should also observe the love bird’s reaction after feeding them this food as they may have a negative reaction to it. Immediately stop if this is the case.
  • Eggs: If the eggs are cooked properly and provided in small quantities then this should be safe to consume for the love birds. However, make sure that it is only given occasionally and does not become a staple part of their diet.
  • Rice: This is another food that should be cooked before it can be given. Provide it in small amounts with absolutely no seasoning or additives in it.
